Notions
Opening up a world of words and ideas and seeing where they were going to take me.
It started on paper, little chats, chats with myself, chats and listening to others.
Then memories, some romantic hopes, some fantasies started to flock to my side.
I included them.
I wanted to draw. I wanted to use these ideas and visually make them come alive. I wanted to see where they could go, what they could be.
I was surprised.
I was elated, it took on a life of its own.
I was like its vessel. What a journey it took me on.
I am soo grateful for all that were very present and involved in this...exhibition.
It was more than an exhibition, it was a conglomeration of past, future, current, friends, directions, exchanges and celebration.
It started with an illustration class. Thank you Alan Corbett. I have never had a tutor who gave me such faith in the process and its potential. You truly are very inspiring, through sharing your work, and your ideas-good conversations that allowed me feel totally capable of pretty much doing anything...how uncanny an outcome.. a wonderful surprise.
Words went from head, heart, memory to paper, bark, jars, to umbrellas to sharing in a special place as an art installation.
(Installation may be the closest technical word for this kind of art production but I am not fond of it. Mechanical, impersonal and a sense of detachment are conjured when I hear it which is in direct juxtaposition to what I have striven for here.)
The space...the place...the timing...the atmosphere...the connections.
I had an idea that to put take these words outside of pages I wanted to see them outside, engaging with the natural environment. I wanted them to be seen by anyone interested in a visual discovery where words and stories can come to life. These words, this notion, needed a home.
I found a place, like a retreat...a haven! On one of the back streets of Cork city I wandered through a thickly painted deep green door and up a windy path, opened it to come across a grave..a plethora of graves. Strangely peaceful, little candles were lighting on one, Nano Nagle's tomb is on display. I see a nun, she tells me take my time. I stroll up to a little garden, a view of the city is now surrounding me, but I feel securely separated from it, safe within the walls of these surroundings. It was my Dad's birthday, wish he could be here to share this with. I felt he was, this place was special, the day was right...I wrote the nuns a letter. I felt like hugging them when they agreed....
Notions is an original fantastical story that is brought to life by stepping into this lit-up magical garden,,,words and wonders
